STERN BRACKET, 40 – 60 HP MANUAL TILT
Install the steerin g shaf t keep er. Ap ply Locquic
Primer and Nut Lock to the splines of the steering
shaft and lower mount bracket.
Install the lower mount bracket and a new locking
nut with its unst aked side facing the mo unt
bracket. Align the bracket with the st eering arm
and tighten the nut to a torque of 130 to 150 ft. lbs.
(176 to 204 N·m).
Fill t he swivel bracket wit h Triple-Guard grease
through the gre ase fit ting on the bracket’s port
side. L ubricate the tilt tube , swivel bracket , and
stern brackets through the two forward grease fit-
tings.
Install the e xhaust housing. Refe r to Exhaust
Housing Installation on p. 247.

Clamp Screw Service
Inspect clamp screw assemblies). Replace swivel
plate and retainer if bent or loose. To install a new
swivel plate , remo ve screw an d old plat e. Apply
Locquic Primer to t he thre ads o f the screw a nd
allow it to dry f our to five minut es. Then apply
Ultra Lock to threa ds. Install a new swivel pla te
with screw and tighten securely.
Stern Bracket Disassembly
Remove bumpers from the upper mount retaining
screws.
Remove screws, upper mount, and grou nd lea d
from the bracket.
