The OPSU converts ac input power (90 to 135 V ac) to 50 W dc output power (47.5
to 52 V dc) for the BBU. The BBU charges the battery and sends the 38 W of power
(11 to 20 V dc) to the ONT. The BBU also provides an auxiliary power connection
that supplies 38 W (11 to 20 V dc) in the event of a power outage that depletes the
backup battery. The auxiliary power connection supplies power to the ONT but does
not charge the battery.
Alarm outputs are available on the BBU to monitor the operational status of the
backup battery. The BBU indicates its status to the service personnel with LEDs and
to the ONT by a signal return connection. The ONT can communicate the BBU status
upstream to the P-OLT.
40.4 Operating modes
There are four operating modes as follows:
• Normal: Under normal operating conditions, the green SYSTEM STATUS LED
light is on. The BBU receives power from the OPSU and battery charge is
maintained.
• Battery power: During a commercial utility outage, the BBU supplies the load
from battery power. When operating in battery mode, the BATTERY POWER
LED light is green.
• Low-Battery Shutdown: When the BBU battery charge is 40% depleted, the BBU
shuts down. In this case, the BATTERY POWER LED flashes green and the
alarm beeps four times every minute. The battery remains in the Off condition
until utility power is restored and no battery current is drawn, or the BATTERY
EMERGENCY USE button is pressed. The BATTERY EMERGENCY USE
button allows the BBU to use the remaining 40% power.
• Auxiliary power: If the BBU battery is depleted, an auxiliary battery can be
connected to the BBU. In this case, the green AUXILIARY POWER LED will
light.
40.5 Status LEDs and user controls
Four indicator LEDs are present on the front of the BBU and one on the OPSU. Each
LED is labeled with an icon. The LEDs and the icons, with their meanings, are shown
in Figure 40-1. The operating mode can be determined by the state of these LEDs;
see Table 40-2.
Note — The battery recharges to at least 80% of full capacity in
18 hours with a normal 48 V dc input from the OPSU.
