Alarm outputs are available on the UPS to monitor the operational status of the
backup battery. The UPS indicates its status using LEDs and to the ONT by a
5-conductor alarm signal return connection. The ONT can communicate the UPS
status upstream to the P-OLT.
Two dc output and alarm connectors are provided on the UPS; however,
Alcatel-Lucent recommends the use of only one dc and alarm connection per UPS
for an ONT installation. As well, Alcatel-Lucent recommends running the power
wires in a separate conduit from the alarm wires.
42.4 Operating modes
There are three operating modes as follows:
• Normal: Under normal operating conditions, the green LED light is on and the red
LED light is off. The load receives its power from the utility and battery charge
is maintained. Three exception states can occur during normal operation:
• Replace battery: This state is entered when the charge control circuit determines the
battery is not holding a charge, or is incapable of being charged. The replace battery
alarm is raised when the battery capacity falls to less than 70% of capacity.
• Battery missing: This is a critical condition in which the UPS is unable to provide
adequate back up power should the main ac supply fail. A battery missing alarm is
sent to the ONT if one or more of the eight batteries are missing.
• Overcurrent: This state occurs if the external load current drawn exceeds the
capacity of the UPS, for example, the output power leads are inadvertently shorted.
An overcurrent condition could damage the UPS.
• Battery backup: In the event of an AC power outage, the UPS supplies the load
from the backup batteries. The Battery LED lights when in battery backup mode.
The UPS remains in battery backup mode until the AC power is restored or the
batteries reach the low-voltage shutdown level of 42 V dc. When AC power is
restored, backup batteries are recharged at a maximum current of 1.8 A per string
of batteries.
• Charging: A float charge maintains the batteries at 100% capacity during normal
operation and ceases charging if the ac input power fails. Battery charging
automatically resumes after ac power is restored if the unit was operating in
battery backup mode. Charging continues until:
• Battery has reached 100% capacity.
• Another ac power failure occurs.
• Additional power is required by the ONT, causing power from the batteries to be
diverted to the ONT (charging resumes when the additional ONT power demand
ends).
• The backup battery is depleted.
42.5 Status LEDs
Three indicator LEDs are present on the front of the UPS. These same LEDs also
appear inside the unit cover. Each LED is labeled with an icon. These icons, with
their meanings, are shown in Figure 42-1. The LED states are described in
Table 42-2.
