Rudder Gain
Rudder gain controls the amount of rudder that the autopilot applies
when turning onto a new heading.
A correctly set gain will, for a course change of 40°, turn a vessel
crisply onto the new heading with an overshoot of no more than
2° to 5°.
A high gain will result in oversteer, recognised as an overshoot in
excess of 5°.
A rudder gain that is too low results in understeer and poor steering
performance.
Warning: It is important to set the gain correctly on planning vessels.
Incorrect adjustment will lead to poor steering performance and
is dangerous at high speeds.
