5.9 Cooling detector
As the operating temperature of the MCT detector used in the spectrometer is signifi-
cantly below room temperature, the detector is filled with liquid nitrogen to be able to
achieve the required operating temperature.
The MCT detector used inside the spectrometer has to be cooled in regular time inter-
vals.
Hold time of MCT detector: Typically 16 hours
Delivery content of detector: • Funnel
• Protective dewar plug
Cooling medium required: • Liquid nitrogen
• About 1l/filling (16 hours)
Indications of a weakening cooling
effect:
• Decreased signal intensity
• No signal at all
• OPUS status light becomes red
• Instrument status message in OPUS
reads: Detector not ready.

CAUTION
Improper use of liquid nitrogen:
Can cause frostbites, damage to eye tissue, and asphyxiation.
➣ Avoid any skin contact.
➣ Always wear face shields or safety goggles.
➣ Use liquid nitrogen only in well-ventilated rooms.
➣ Observe the safety instructions described in chapter 5.9.1.
