6 Glossary
Block A block of ceramic material generally porcelain or ceramic
used for creating restorations. This material is glued to a
mandrel which seats into the mandrel holder in the mill.
Collet Is a holding device that forms a collar around the object to
be held and exerts a strong clamping force on the object
when it is tightened via a tapered outer collar.
Lid Covers the top of the milling chamber where the block and
spindles are located.
Interlock key A hardware key that allows a user to access certain
functions in a diagnostic or troubleshooting state; not a
typical end-user control.
Graphical user interface
(GUI)
This is a user interface for interacting with a computer
which employs graphical images and widgets in addition to
text to represent the information and actions available to
the user. Usually the actions are performed through direct
manipulation of the graphical elements.
Homing Allows each axis to find its location relative to a known
“home” position.
Job Collective term for the restoration data and its metadata
and tool path as they are transferred together from the
Design Center, through the job server, to the PlanMill 40.
Mandrel The lockable metal piece to which the ceramic block is
glued. This is the part that is fastened into the mill’s
mandrel holder.
Milling chamber The area of the milling unit in which the milling process
occurs.
Coolant Solution that is sprayed onto the block during the milling
process to keep the grinding tools cool and move the
material away from the restoration as it comes off the block.
Preventative maintenance It is the proactive cleaning and maintenance to the systems
before a problem arises. Its objective is to keep your
equipment running the best they can.
Restoration The finished crown, inlay, onlay, coping, etc. that is
produced by the PlanScan system.
Spindle Cylindrical objects on either side of the milling chamber that
house the collets and move left and right during the milling
process.
Grinding tools Instruments used for grinding ceramics in the PlanMill 40.
These will also be referred to as burrs.
