Another cause for an axis that is difficult to move manually is a defective servo
motor. Typically seen on the Z-axis, a defective servo motor can create additional
resistance through the mechanics of the ball screw such that the axis will barely
move or not move at all by manually pushing on the carriage. To diagnose this
type of issue, simply remove the servo motor and then evaluate the axis
movement. If the axis movement gets drastically smoother, then the servo motor
should be replaced.
If there are no obstructions and removing the servo motor doesn’t help, the axis
alignment may need repair.
NOTE
Axis alignment repair should only be attempted by an experienced service technician. The
steps to align an Axis vary depending on which axis is being repaired. Refer to the ball
screw replacement sections of Chapter 7 and skip ahead to the steps in these repair
procedures that detail the axis alignment.
16. With the lid open, verify the servo motor encoder is responding for each axis.
Manually move each axis while verifying the "POS ACT" (position actual) value
changes.
If the Pos Act value does not change on ANY of the axes when moved, then
reboot the mill and try again. If only some of the axes do not respond, then either
the servo motor or its cable is defective and must be replaced.
17. With the lid closed, verify each of the 4 amplifier "power" LEDs (green) are on and the
“fault” LEDs (red) are off.
If there are no power LEDs on and the lid is closed, then select Engage Motor
Power in Technician Console -> High Level. This should restore power to the
amplifiers and the power LEDs should be lit.
If none of the power LEDs illuminate, then double check the lid status is "closed
closed" and the 48 volt supply is sufficient. If still no power LEDs, then the CPU
module is probably defective.
If some of the power LEDs illuminate and some do not, then the amp fuses may
be blown. Use an ohm meter to check the fuses. If any of the fuses are blown,
then replace the defective amp module.
If any of the axes have both green and red LEDs lit together, toggle the amp off
and on in the Motion screen. This should clear the faulted amplifier and the red
LED should go off.
If an amplifier fault will not clear when toggling the amp off and back on, the fuse
is known to be good (power LED is on), then replace the Amp module and re-
evaluate. If the problem persists replace the CPU module.
2.4 Troubleshooting mill motion system
1. Navigate the PlanMill 40 application to: Technician Console
2. Re-initialize the motion system. If initialization fails, perform troubleshooting
procedure in section 2.3 "Troubleshooting mill “Fails to Initialize” error" on page 85.
3. Navigate to: Technician Console -> Motion Diagnostics -> Servo Diagnostics.
4. Run the servo diagnostics test on one of the four axes. The graph below is an
example of what a good graph looks like.
