CompactLogix 5480 System Chapter 1
Replaceable Fans
The CompactLogix 5480 controller uses fans at the top and bottom of the
controller to help maintain lower operating temperatures when the controller
is operating.
Fan use includes speed control and monitoring. Faults indicate fan operating
conditions as follows:
• Minor fault - Triggered when one or both fans are not operating at the
requested speed or at all, either due to a failure or that the fan
is removed.
The following events cause a failure:
– One or both fans fail and the controller temperature is
>32…36.66 °C (>90…98 °F).
– The fan or airflow channel is clogged, for example, with debris.
– The fan runs in consistently high temperature conditions.
– The fan experiences component corrosion.
The fault cause and length of time that the fan has been operating affects
the recommended user action.
– If the fan has been operating for a relatively short time and the fan or
airflow channel are clogged, we recommend that you clean the debris
and continue to use the fan.
– If the fan has been operating in consistently high temperature
conditions or component corrosion has occurred, we recommend
that you replace both fans.
You can use the Minor Faults tab on the Controller Properties dialog
box in your Logix Designer application project to monitor for the faults.
The fault code is T17:C36.
• Major fault - Triggered if both fans fail and the controller exceeds the
maximum operating temperature. There are two levels of
temperature faults:
– Major Recoverable Fault - This occurs when the controller
temperature is >36.66…37.77 °C (>98…100 °F).
The fault code is T17:C34.
TIP In your Logix Designer application project, you can use the HardwareStatus
object with GSV instructions to obtain status information about the fans and
temperatures.
This object is supported in Ladder Diagram and Structured Text routines and
in Add-On Instructions.
For more information, see the Logix Designer application online help.
