Remove bolts -arrows-.
Remove bolt -1- and finally bolt -2-.
Caution
Pay particular attention to the correct handling and transport of
the steering column, refer to
“2.4 Steering Column, Handling and Transporting”,
page 289 .
Carefully remove steering column.
Note
Upper and lower part of steering column must not be separa‐
ted without being marked.
This may lead to rattling noises during later driving operations
if the mesh section is not in its original installation position.
If the protective boot is to be removed, refer to
⇒ “2.3 Protective Boot, Removing and Installing”, page 289 .
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
When replacing the mechanical steering column, the handle
for steering column must also be replaced.
Place the steering column on the cross member.
Lightly install all screws by hand.
Tighten screws -1- to -4- to specified torque in sequence
shown.
Then tighten nut -5- to specified torque.
Torque specification and tightening sequence, refer to
⇒ “2.1 Steering Column Overview”, page 283 .
Install the universal joint on the steering pinion and tighten it.
Install protective boot correctly and tighten.
Tightening specification ⇒ Rep. Gr. 26 , ⇒ Rep. Gr. 34
The following programs must be performed in Guided Fault
Finding or in Guided Functions if a new steering column was
installed:
-Vehicle Diagnostic Tester-
Adapt Driving Authorization System to the Existing Immobilizer:
Access/Start Authorization Control Module - J518- - Immobil‐
izer activation/new identity.
Coding Access/Start Authorization Control Module - J518- :
Access/Start Authorization Control Module - J518- - Code
control module (repair group 96)
Perform Steering Angle Sensor - G85- Basic Setting:
Steering Angle Sensor - G85- - Steering Angle Sensor cali‐
bration.
