The large steering arm thrust ring contact surface -arrows- points
toward the tie rod. Collar -1- points to steering gear -2-.
– Place steering arm thrust ring -1- on the steering rack.
– Install tie rod on steering gear, refer to
⇒ “3.8 Tie Rod, Removing and Installing”, page 305 .
– An axle alignment may be required. Refer to
⇒ “5 Wheel Alignment”, page 247 .
– Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts, refer to ⇒ Rep.
Gr. 44 .
– On vehicles with air suspension, position vehicle on wheels,
refer to
⇒ “4 Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels”, page 10 .
3.5 Steering Arm, Measuring Mechanically
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Locking Pliers - VAS6199-
– First measure steering arm in “Guided Fault Finding” with -
Vehicle Diagnostic Tester- .
– Connect -Vehicle Diagnostic Tester- and select troubleshoot‐
ing using “Functions/Component selection” -Vehicle Diagnos‐
tic Tester- .
“Chassis (Repair group 01; 40 - 49)”
“Chassis (Repair group 01; 45 - 47)”
“01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems”
“ABS and ESP brake electronics”
“Electrical Components”
“G 85 steering arm measurement”
If result of measurement was outside if tolerance, measure steer‐
ing arm mechanically.
– With vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist, refer
to ⇒ “4 Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels”, page 10 .
– Remove left boot from steering gear.
– Turn steering out of center position toward right as far as stop.
Steering Gear with Steering Arm Thrust Ring
– Measure dimension -a- as shown in illustration.
Dimension -a- must be 144.6 mm.
Note
If dimension -a- is not achieved, check whether version is same
on left and right.
– Remove right boot from steering gear.
– Turn steering toward left as far as stop.
– Measure the dimension between the steering gear and the tie
rod/steering arm thrust ring hex fitting.
Dimension -a- must be the same in both measurements.
