2.3 Protective Boot, Removing and Instal‐
ling
Removing
– Remove the steering column, refer to
⇒ “2.2 Steering Column, Removing and Installing”,
page 284 .
– Mount steering column in vise as shown in illustration.
– Mark position of upper part to lower part.
– Pull lower part off upper part with a sharp jerk
-in direction off arrow-.
– Remove protective boot from lower part.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
– Before installation, check contact surface of the guide on the
lower part -arrow- for dirt and scores.
Note
If contact surface has scores, replace steering column since a
sufficient sealing between steering column and protective boot
can no longer be guaranteed.
– Slide protective boot onto lower part by slightly rotating it as
shown in illustration.
– Assemble steering column so that markings align and sliding
together is performed with a jerk.
– When the steering column has been correctly assembled, the
lower part cannot be separated from the upper part using nor‐
mal force.
– Install the steering column, refer to
⇒ “2.2 Steering Column, Removing and Installing”,
page 284 .

porting
WARNING
♦ The correct handling of the steering column must always
be observed.
♦ Incorrect handling of steering column may cause damage
to steering column and therefore lead to a safety risk.
