– With vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist, refer
to ⇒ “4 Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels”, page 10 .
– Remove the wheel.
– Turn steering wheel into straight ahead position.
– Remove noise insulation, refer to ⇒ Rep. Gr. 66 .
– Clean the power steering gear and subframe in the boot area.
Caution
• While doing this, no dirt must enter the steering gear
through the faulty bellows.
– Remove the tie rod end, refer to
⇒ “3.7 Tie Rod End, Removing and Installing”, page 304 .
– Open and remove the spring clip -1- using the Hose Clip Pliers
- VAG1921- .
– Remove the clamp -3- and remove the boot -2- from the power
steering gear.
– Remove the boot from the tie rod end.

If corrosion, damage, wear-out or first signs of soiling on steer‐
ing rack can be seen, complete steering gear must be re‐
placed.

If no grease film is visible on steering rack, steering gear must
also be replaced completely.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
Before installing, coat the steering rack with the grease supplied
in the repair set.
Caution
Do not use other grease under any circumstances.
For this purpose, turn steering to stop toward both sides in suc‐
cession.
For clearer illustration, steering gear has been removed in the
illustration.
