This function is used to check whether the members of the reserved group exist in the
directly connected network segment. You can ping other devices that use multicast
addresses.
l Pinging a common multicast group address
The ping to a common multicast group address implements the following functions:
– Generating multicast traffic and triggering the creation of multicast routing entries
Based on multicast routing information, you can check whether the protocol runs
normally, determine whether the network can carry multicast services, or test the
forwarding performance.
– Checking the group members on the network
Based on the ICMP-Echo-Reply messages received from destination hosts, the S9300
on which the ping command is used determines the group members on the network, and
calculate the TTL and response time of the packets from the S9300 to members. You
can run the ping command repeatedly at a certain interval to calculate the network delay
and route flapping.
The mtrace command can be used to trace the following paths and export the hop information.
l RPF path from a multicast source to the device of a querier
l Multicast path from a multicast source to the device of a querier
l RPF path from a multicast source to a destination host
l Multicast path from a multicast source to a destination host
NOTE
You can ping multicast addresses by using the Network Quality Analysis (NQA) test instances or related
commands. For detailed configuration methods of NQA test instances, see the Quidway S9300 Terabit
Routing Switch Configuration Guide - Network Management.
