The symbols for the parameters are based on the principles described by
Wandrup [2]. Each symbol consists of three parts, described below:
1. Property A symbol in italics
describing the quantity
p for pressure
c for concentration
F for fraction
V for volume
etc.
2. Component An abbreviation of the
component name
O
2
for oxygen
CO
2
for carbon dioxide
COHb for carboxyhemoglobin
etc.
3. (System) Specification of the system B for blood
P for plasma
a for arterial blood
v
–
for mixed venous blood
A for alveolar air
T for patient temperature
