5.4.4.13 Operation 43. Check and adjustment of axial preload in tapered bearings of
the pivot
To check and, if necessary, adjust the axial preload in tapered bearings 6 and 7
(figure 5.4.42) of the pivot, carry out the following preparatory work:
- clear the FDA from dirt;
- place the tractor on a flat ground, stop the engine, apply the parking brake, put
chocks under the rear wheels at the front and at the back to prevent them from spontane-
ous movement;
- jack up the front tractor part and mount supports under the FDA in the intended
spots for the levelling jack;
- unscrew the wheel retaining nuts and remove the wheels while observing precau-
tions;
- detach steering links from the left and right wheel gear groups.
- remove the pin that fastens the hydraulic cylinder from the bracket, attached to the
wheel gear group.
Check of axial preload in tapered bearings of the pivot shall be performed in the fol-
lowing order:
- with the help of a dynamometer, determine the force for each wheel gear group to
turn, first to one side and then to the other. The force shall be applied to the wheel retain-
ing bolts that are located closest to the horizontal axis of the wheel gear group.
- the axial preload in the bearings shall correspond to the force of turning the gear
group between 60 to 80 N applied to the wheel-retaining bolts. Repeat the force checking
operation three times in each direction to determine an average.
In case of a turning force of 30 to 50 N, it is necessary to adjust the preload in the
pivot bearings in the following order:
- check tightening of bolts of lower axle 8 (it shall make from 180 to 200 Nm);
- screw out retaining bolts 4 (figure 5.4.42) of pivot upper axle 1;
- with the help of dismounting bolts lift up upper axle 1, and remove adjusting shims
5 of identical thickness from both sides of axle flange to reach the necessary preload in the
bearings;
- tighten axle retaining bolts 4 with a torque from 180 to 200 Nm; tighten them in a
criss-cross pattern and make sure to turn the wheel gear group;
- re-check the preload in pivot bearings by checking the turning force of the gear to
both sides;
- repeat the listed operations for the second wheel gear group.
If the turning force is below 30 N, then before adjusting preload in the bearings, it is
necessary to dismount lower axle 8 (figure 5.4.42) and check the technical condition of
lower bearing 7.
After adjustment, grease the bearings of the wheel gear group. Remove protective
cap 9 in axle 8 and inject grease through grease fitting 2 in axles 5, 8.
After adjustment and greasing of the bearings of pivoted connection has been com-
pleted, install the parts taken off the FDA in reverse order. Tighten the crown nuts for the
steering link ball pins with a torque of 100 to 140 Nm and forelock, while unscrewing of the
nut is not allowed when the slot of the nut and the hole of the ball pin are aligned.
