3 Getting Started with SIMATIC PDM Volume 5
3.2.3 Authorizing SIMATIC PDM
A product-specific authorization (license to use) is needed in order
to work with SIMATIC PDM. The software can only be used if the
authorization required for the program is detected on the hard disk
of the respective PC/PG.
The authorization for SIMATIC PDM is not identical with that for
SIMATIC STEP 7/PCS 7 or other associated option packages.
To authorize your software you need the copyrighted authorization
diskettes supplied together with the device. The Windows software
AuthorsW which is required to display, install and uninstall the
authorization is included on the software CD as installable compo-
nent. As soon as you have installed this software onto your hard
disk, you can use the authorization operations.
You can install AuthorsW together with the other components on
the software CD (standard) or by itself any time.
IMPORTANT
Please be sure to read the ReadMe.txt file on the authorization dis-
kettes and the information provided in this chapter. Failure to do so
could lead to the authorization being irrevocably lost.
Authorization during installation You should install the authorization when prompted while you are
installing SIMATIC PDM for the first time. Without authorization you
can run SIMATIC PDM only in the DEMO mode.
Insert the authorization disk when prompted by the installation
manager during program installation.
IMPORTANT
Make sure the disk is not write-protected as otherwise the authori-
zation cannot be carried out.
Then confirm the prompt.
The authorization is transferred to a physical drive (typically,
the first hard drive), i.e. your computer “remembers” that you
are an authorized user.
SIMATIC PDM is delivered with several authorization disks. You
need one authorization for the actual SIMATIC PDM program. You
need another authorization to define the number of devices that
can be configured (you can configure up to four devices in the basic
version). You can also carry out the authorization after completion
of the installation process (see page 5–429).
IMPORTANT
Before you exchange a hard drive or install the operating system
new, you have to copy the authorization back from the hard drive
to the authorization diskettes again (see page 5–430).
