Chapter 1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
Figure 1-1. CDM-625A Advanced Satellite Modem
The CDM-625A Advanced Satellite Modem (Figure 1-1) is intended for both closed network and
legacy Intelsat applications. It serves as the replacement for the CDM-625. It is 100% backwards
compatible with the CDM-625, but incorporates new features and expansion capability.
It is compact 1RU high and 17.6 inches deep and consumes only 48 watts (typical).
It features front panel LED Indicators, a keypad, and a Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) for
local configuration and monitoring and control (M&C). It also can be fully remote-controlled
through its serial remote control or Ethernet-based HTTP (Web Server), SNMP or Telnet
Command Line interfaces.
Compared with the CDM-625, additional front panel LEDs are incorporated that permit a
clearer visual indication of the status of the unit.
It provides a full range of built-in (i.e., no plug-in cards required) traffic data interface
types, including EIA-530/422, all G.703 types, Quad E1 Drop and Insert, HSSI, ASI, and
10/100 Ethernet.
Its IF frequency range simultaneously covers 50-180 MHz and 950-2250 MHz. The extension to
2250 MHz is to address the needs of future high-throughput satellites (HTS).
It supports an entirely new family of waveforms VersaFEC-2®.
It provides Viterbi, Sequential, concatenated Reed-Solomon (RS), Trellis Coded Modulation
(TCM), Turbo Product Coding (TPC), Low-density Parity Check Coding (LDPC), VersaFEC®
(short-block, low latency LDPC) , and VersaFEC-2® (VFEC-2) as Forward Error Correction
(FEC) options.
