Groundingofsystemcables
Allmetalliccablecoverings(armour,metallicsheathingandotherprotection)mustbe
electricallyconnectedtothevessel'shullatbothendsexceptinthecaseofnalsub-circuits
wheretheyshouldbeconnectedatthesupplyendonly.
Groundingconnectionsshouldbemadeusingaconductorwhichhasacross-sectionalarea
appropriateforthecurrentratingofthecable,orwithametalclampwhichgripsthemetallic
coveringofthecableandisbondedtothehullofthevessel.Thesecablecoveringsmayalso
begroundedbymeansofglandsspeciallyintendedforthispurposeanddesignedtoensurea
goodgroundconnection.Theglandsusedmustbermlyattachedto,andingoodelectrical
contactwith,ametalstructuregroundedinaccordancewiththeserecommendations.
Electricalcontinuitymustbeensuredalongtheentirelengthofallcablecoverings,
particularlyatjointsandsplices.Innocaseshouldtheshieldingofcablesbeusedasthe
onlymeansofgroundingcablesorunits.
Metalliccasings,pipesandconduitsmustbegrounded,andwhenttedwithjointsthese
mustbemechanicallyandelectricallygroundedlocally.
Cableconnectionsandterminations
Allcableconnectionsareshownontheapplicablecableplanand/orinterconnection
diagrams.
Wherethecableplanshowscableconnectionsoutsideanequipmentboxoutline,the
connectionsaretobemadetoaplugorsocketwhichmatchestheplugorsocketonthat
particularitemofequipment.
Wheretwocablesareconnectedinseriesviaajunctionboxorterminalblock,thescreensof
bothcablesmustbeconnectedtogether,butnotgrounded.
Caremustbetakentoensurethatthecorrectterminationsareusedforallcableconductors,
especiallythosethataretobeconnectedtoterminalblocks.Inthiscase,crimped
sleeve-terminationsmustbettedtopreventtheconductorcorefromfrayingandmaking
abadconnectionwiththeterminalblock.Itisalsooftheutmostimportancethatwhere
crimpedterminationsareused,thecorrectsizeofcrimpandcrimpingtoolareused.In
addition,eachcableconductormusthaveaminimumof15cmslack(serviceloop)left
beforeitsterminationistted.
