FMS GENERAL DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION 1
Part I: Chapter 1 – INTRODUCTION
The THALES Flight Management & Guidance System (FMGS), as
installed on Airbus Single-Aisle Family (A318/319/320/321), provides
Flight Management (FM) and Flight Guidance (FG) functions.
The main FM functions are:
Navigation,
Flight planning,
Performance prediction and optimization,
Provision of information to cockpit displays (MCDU, ND, PFD)
Auto-tuning of navaids.
The main FG functions are:
Flight Director (FD),
Auto Pilot (A/P),
Auto thrust (A/THR) commands.
In addition, the total system provides fault isolation and detection.
The FMGS consists of the following components:
2 Flight Management & Guidance Computers (FMGC), in avionics
compartment,
2 Multipurpose Control & Display Units (MCDU), at sides of forward
pedestal,
1 Flight Control Unit (FCU), on glare-shield,
2 Flight Augmentation Computers (FAC), in avionics compartment.
Comprehensive navigation and performance databases are stored
within each FMGC. The navigation database is updated every 28 days
by the operator. A separate database allows additional navigation data
to be entered and stored by the pilot.
