Gearcase Removal and Installation

Install the upper driveshaft on to the lower drive-
shaft.
Shift the gearcase into FORWARD gear:
• Temporarily connect the shift actuator cable to
the engine harness.
• Turn the key switch to the ON position. Do NOT
start the engine.
• Rotate the propeller shaft while a helper shifts
the remote control into FORWARD gear.
After shifting the gearcase into FORWARD gear,
turn the key switch to the OFF position. Then dis-
connect the shift actuator cable from the engine
harness.
Route the oil hose and shift actuator cable through
the opening at the front of the exhaust housing.
The oil hose is routed to starboard, the actuator
cable to port.

Install the gearcase to the outboard.
Slide the gearcase into place, making sure:
• Driveshaft engages the crankshaft.
• Water tube enters the water pump.
• Lower inner exhaust housing installs correctly.
Install the eight gearcase mounting nuts.
• Tighten black nuts to 29 lbs·ft (39 N·m).
• Tighten silver nuts to 38 lbs·ft (52 N·m).
