About Multicasting
Multicastingisusedtosupportreal‐timeapplicationssuchasvideoconferencesorstreaming
audio.Amulticastserverdoesnothavetoestablishaseparateconnectionwitheachclient.It
merelybroadcastsitsservicetothenetwork,andanyhoststhatwanttoreceivethemulticast
registerwiththeirlocalmulticast
switch/router.Althoughthisapproachreducesthenetwork
overheadrequiredbyamulticastserver,thebroadcasttrafficmustbecarefullyprunedatevery
multicastswitch/routeritpassesthroughtoensurethattrafficisonlypassedtothehoststhat
subscribedtothisservice.
TheG‐SeriesswitchdeviceusesIGMP(InternetGroup
ManagementProtocol)toqueryforany
attachedhostswhowanttoreceiveaspecificmulticastservice.ThedevicelooksuptheIP
MulticastGroupusedforthisserviceandaddsittotheegresslistoftheLevel3interface.Itthen
propagatestheservicerequestontoanyneighboring
multicastswitch/routertoensurethatitwill
continuetoreceivethemulticastservice.
