Overview
OSPFv3istheOpenShortestPathFirstroutingprotocolforIPv6.ItissimilartoOSPFv2inits
conceptofalinkstatedatabase,intra/interareaandASexternalroutesandvirtuallinks.OSPFv3
alsodiffersfromOSPFv2inanumberofrespects:
Peeringisdonevialinklocaladdresses.
•The
protocolislink‐ratherthannetworkcentric.
AddressingsemanticshavebeenmovedtoleafLSAs,whicheventuallywillallowitsusefor
bothIPv4andIPv6.
•TwonewLSAshavebeenintroduced:thelinkLSAandtheintraareaLSA.
Pointtopointlinksaresupportedinordertoenableoperationover
tunnels.OSPFv3views
IPv6overIPv4tunnelsasapointtopointinterfacewithalinklocaladdressandpossibly,a
globalunicastaddress.OSPFv3usesthereportedMTUfortunnelinterfaces.
OSPFv3supportsECMProutes.OSPFv3includesNSSAandASexternalLSAoverflowlimit
support.RFC1583compatibilitydoesnot
applytoOSPFv3.NoOSPFv3authenticationmethods
aresupportedatthistime.
LSAformatsarechanged,andthetype3and4summaryLSAsare renamed“interareaprefix”
and“interarearouterLSAs.AlsonotethatOSPFv3LSAidentifierscontainnoaddressing
semantics.LSAscopeisgeneralizedtolink,area,
andASscope.OSPFv3specifiestheprocessing

routing license key, and have enabled routing on the device, you must activate your license as described in
Activating Licensed Features” on page 2-27 in order to enable the OSPFv3 protocol configuration command
