1. Introduction

1.3 The Chart Processor Unit
The chart processor unit is the heart of the system, and is responsible for the loading, storing, updating and
processing of electronic sea charts, with the DVD-ROM drive and floppy disk drive. The DVD-ROM and floppy
disk drives are behind the lid on the front panel.
Note: Do not operate the ECDIS with a media (FD/CD/DVD) inserted in its drive, to prevent damage to the drive
and media. Remove media from its drive after usage. Insert media only to do operations such as backing up data,
updating charts, and the like. After completion, remove the media from its drive and store it in its case, before using
the ECDIS. Store media out of direct sunlight, in a place where temperature and humidity are moderate and stable.

1.4 How to Turn the Power On/Off
The system may be turned on by turning on the power switch at the rear of the processor unit then pressing the
POWER switch on the Control Unit, until you feel a "click". The equipment releases a beep when the POWER
switch is turned on. To turn off the system, reverse this sequence.
Note 1: The amount of resources used increases over time, sometimes slowing down operation. If operation seems
to be slow, re-set the power, when use of the equipment is not required (when in port, etc.).
Note 2: If the ambient temperature is less than 0°C (32°F) when the power is applied, nothing appears on the
display. This is because the heater is warming the chart processor unit. The display appears in approx. 10 minutes.
Note 3: Be sure all LAN cables are connected BEFORE turning on the power.
1.5 How to Find Version Number of ECDIS Software
The ECDIS software version number is displayed in the information area, next to the system
configuration indication. There are two set of ECDIS software number. First set of numbers
indicates version number of Human Interface, second set of numbers indicates version
number of communication module for sensors. They have to be same version number to
ensure correct operation of ECDIS.
1.6 Diagnostics
The ECDIS has two types of diagnostic tests. One type (several tests) checks the
functionality of the equipment and the other type calibrates the monitor. This manual
provides only the instructions for testing the keyboard. For the diagnostic tests, see the
service manual.
