LNA
Low Noise Amplifier. The preamplifier mounted at the focus of a parabolic antenna and which
amplifies the received signal for a downconverter mounted nearby which then feeds an earth
station receiver. It is designed to contribute the least amount of thermal noise to the received
signal.
LNB
Low Noise Block downconverter. A combination low noise amplifier and downconverter built
into one device. An LNB is usually located at the center of the satellite dish.
LSCP
Lightweight Streaming Control Protocol.
luma
The brightness of the video signal. This term is preferred over “luminance” for video signals. See
also
chroma .
M
M2P
The Harmonic MPEG-2 parallel interface for carrying MPEG-2 transport streams.
M2S
The Harmonic MPEG-2 serial interface for carrying MPEG-2 transport streams. Developed
before DVB-ASI became standardized.
MAC
Media Access Control. As defined by IEEE 802, the MAC provides the lower portion of the
datalink layer, which is the OSI layer that is responsible for data transfer across a single physical
connection, or series of bridged connections, between two network entities. The MAC differs for
various physical media.
MAC address
The permanent identifier for a device. It consists of six octets separated by colons, for example,
00:20:A3:xx:xx:xx. The first six characters identify the manufacturer. Harmonic assigns the next
six characters as a unique device identifier.
Max Stream Identifier
The maximum range of the stream identifier. The numbers depend on the number of streams and
cannot be overlapping with the minimum range. The typical range should be 500 to 10500. See
also
Min Stream Identifier .
Mbaud
Megabaud, which is the signal rate of a line, expressed in millions. It can also be the switching
speed, or number of transitions (voltage or frequency changes), per second.
