Engine Controller Reprogramming (Reflash)
Process Overview
The reprogramming feature is in the Special Tests menu
o
n the Digit al Wrench™ scre en. Start Dig ital Wrench™
and click on the Special Tests menu icon (red tool box). A
technician should be familiar with the proc ess and w ith
computer op eration in g eneral be fore attemp ting to
reprogram an ECU.
The Digital Wrench™ Engine Controller Reprogramming
(
or “Reflash”) feature allows reprogramming of the ECU
fuel and ignition map. To successfully reprogram the ECU,
an Autho rization Key must be obt ained by en tering a
Request Cod e in the bo x provided o n the Reflash
Authorization site. The Request Co de is autom atically
generated by Digital Wrench™ during the reprogramming
process. The Reflash Authorization site is located under
the “ Service and W arranty” d rop down menu on the
dealer website at: www.polarisdealers.com.
IMPORTANT: Failure to follow t he repr ogramming
instructions completely and corr
ectly can result in an
engine t hat does not ru n! Replac ement ECUs are
programmed as “no- start” and require a reflash for
them to work.
Reprogramming (Reflash) Tips:
• BATTERY VOL TAGE: The majority of problems
w
ith reprogramming ca n be attributed to a low
battery. Be sure the battery voltage (no load) is at
least 13 volts and at lea st 12.5 volts with the key
‘ON’. Connect a battery cha rger if ne cessary to
bring volt age le vel ab ove min imum. F ully ch arge
the battery before you attempt to reprogram.
• DEDICATED LAPT OP: Best result s are obt ained
using a
lap top com puter tha t is “ dedicated to
Digital W rench™”. A la ptop th at is u sed b y a
variety of pe ople and in sever al ap plications
around th e dea lership is mo re likely to cause a
reprogramming pr oblem than one de dicated to
Digital Wrench™ diagnostics only.
• OBTAINING THE LA TEST UPD ATE:
Re
programming updates are provided periodically
and contain th e most recent ca librations (see
“Digital Wrench™ Updates”).
• CLOSE NON-ESSENTIAL PROGRAMS : Polaris
re
commends that yo u DO NOT inst all n on-
essential pr ograms o n a Ser vice De partment
laptop. Ca mera detection sof tware, V irus
Scanners, Tool Ba rs, etc. m ay clog up m emory if
running in the background and make it h arder for
the diagnostic software to operate.
• KNOW THE PROCESS: If you are not familiar with
the en
tire r eprogramming pr ocess, re view the
HELP se ction of the d iagnostic so ftware be fore
you attempt reprogramming. Click on the ? on the
tool bar or pr ess F11. The infor mation in th e on-
line help is the mos t current a nd complete
information ava ilable. This shou ld b e you r first
step until you are familiar with the process.
• COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS: If you ha ve had
pr
oblems comm unicating with a vehicle while
performing dia gnostic f unctions, do no t a ttempt
reprogramming until the cause has been identified
and fixe d. Check all con nections, an d be sure
battery voltage is as specified.
Proceed to http://polaris.diagsys.
com for
specific information an d F AQs on ho w to
troubleshoot communication problems.
• DON’T DISTURB THE PC : While
r eprogramming
is in pr ogress, d on’t mo ve th e mo use an d do n’t
touch the keyboard. The process only takes a few
minutes, and is best left alone until complete.
