Starter Motor Removal
1. Remove th e dr iver’s side seat an d disconn ect the
battery.
2. Raise and support rear of vehicle. Remove the right-
h
and rear wheel if necessary.
3. Remove the (+) positive wire (A) from the starter motor
terminal.
4. From the righ t-hand side wh eel well, re move the
u
pper starter motor fastener (B) securing the starter
motor a nd ( -) neg ative batter y cab le to th e en gine.
Completely loosen the lowe r starter motor fas tener
(C).
NOTE: The (-) negative battery cable is mounted to
t
he engine using the upper starter mounting bolt.
5. Remove the starter from the engine.
Starter Motor Installation
1. Inspect and replace starter motor O-ring if needed.
2. Lubricate the starter motor O-ring with fre sh engine
oil.
3. Place the lower starter motor fastener (C) through the
lower
mounting boss in the starter motor.
4. Install the starter motor onto the engine case.
5. Install the (- ) n egative batter y cab le in th e up per
star
ter bo lt an d hand tighten th e upp er starter
mounting bolt (B).
6. Install a nd tor que th e lower mounting bo lt (C) to
s
pecification.
IMPORTANT: Tighten th e lowe r sta rter bolt first, a s
the
bottom hole acts as a pilot hole to properly align
the starter drive (bendix) with the flywheel. This helps
prevent binding and starter damage.
7. Torque th e up per star ter mounting bo lt ( B) to
s
pecification.
8. If r emoved, ins tall th e r ight-hand rear wh eel a nd
to
rque wheel nuts to specification (see chapter 2).
9. Lower vehicle.
10. Connect the (-) negative battery cable and install the
driver’s s
ide seat.

Starter Mounting Bolts and Nut:
7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)
