Fan Control Circuit Operation / Testing
Power is supplied to th e fan via the Ora nge/Black wire
when the relay is ON. The ground path for the fan motor
is thr ough the Bro wn ha rness wi re. Refer to “ RELAYS”
later in this chapter for more information on fan functions.
NOTE: The fan may not function or operation may
be delayed if cool
ant level is low or if air is trapped in
the coo ling system. Be su re coo ling system is full
and purged of air. Refer to Chapter 2 “Maintenance”
for cooling system information.
Fan Control Circuit Bypass Test
1. Disconnect harness from coolant temperature sensor
on th e en gine cylin der h ead (see Ch apter 4 fo r
location).
2. With the transmission in Park, start the engine. After
a fe
w seconds, the fan should start running and the
“Check Engin e” ind icator should d isplay on the
instrument cluster. This indic ates al l other
components are working properly.
3. If the fan does not run or runs slowly, check the fan
mo
tor wiring, ground, motor condition and mechanical
relay fo r pr oper op eration. Re pair or replace as
necessary. If the fan runs with the se nsor ha rness
disconnected, but will not turn on when the engine is
hot, ch eck th e coolant te mperature sensor and
connector terminals.
Coolant Temperature Sensor
The coolant temperature sensor can be tested u sing an
ohmmeter or voltmeter.
1. With the engine an d temp erature se nsor at room
tem
perature (68
°F = 20°C), disconnect the harness.
2. With the m eter in th e o hms m ode, p lace th e meter
l
eads onto the sensor contacts.
3. Use the ta ble T emperature / Resistance t able t o
d
etermine if the sensor needs to be replaced.
NOTE: If the coo lant t emperature sen sor o r circu it
ma
lfunctions the radiator fan will default to 'ON'.
Keep hands away from fan blades during
operation. Serious personal injury could result.
