Ephemeral ports
In most cases, source ports are ephemeral, meaning random within a specified range. When an outgoing
request is made, the application solicits the host device for a port from its ephemeral pool. In a few
cases, the destination port is also ephemeral, meaning that both the source and destination ports are
random.
IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol—A protocol for retrieving e-mail messages.
SIP
Session Initiation Protocol—A signalling protocol used for establishing sessions in an IP network.
SSH
Secure Shell—A network protocol that allows exchange of data using a secure channel between two
networked devices.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol—A protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers.
