EVC Definition
TheMetroEthernetForum(MEF)definesanEVCas“anassociationoftwoormoreUNIs,”
whereaUNIisastandard10/100/1000 Ethernetinterfacethatisthepointofdemarcation
betweenthe CustomerEquipment(CE)andtheMetroEthernetNetwork(MEN)oftheservice
provider.Insimpleterms,anEVC
performstwofunctions.
• Connectstwoormoresubscribersites(UNIs)enablingthetransferofEthernetservice
frames
•PreventsdatatransferbetweenthesubscribersitesthatarenotpartofthesameEVC
ThiscapabilityenablesanEVCtoprovidedataprivacyandsecuritysimilartoaFrameRelay
orATMPermanentVirtual
Circuit(PVC).
MultipleEVCscanresideonacommonbondinggrouporEthernetport.EachEVCtypically
hasanassociatedEVCVLANtagwhoseVLANIDisuniqueamongotherEVCsintheMEN.
TheEVCVLANtagallowstheEVCtobeidentifiedandsepara tedfromotherEVCs.
Ata
minimum,twoitemsmustbesetupfortheEVC:theMENportitwilluseandtheS‐tagit
willuse.
TheS‐tagmustmatchtheEVCsconfiguredattheTotalAccess5000.
EVC Guidelines
Toensurevalidprovisioning,enforcethefollowingguidelineswhencreatinganEVC:
•AnEVCisappliedonlyifthe statusisRunning(asindicatedinthe
show evcoutput),
whichindicatesthattheconditionsarevalid
•TwoEVCsareconsideredtobeduplicateiftheybothhavethesamevaluesforthe
followingattributes:
–MENport
–S‐tag
•NotwoEVCscanhavethesamename
•IfthesystemismanagedthroughaVLANonadesignatedbondinggrouporEthernet
port,theS‐tagvaluefortheEVCcannotequalthemanagementVLANID
