10/100/1000EthernetinterfacethatisthepointofdemarcationbetweentheCEandtheMEN
oftheserviceprovider.Insimpleterms,anEVCperformstwofunctions.
• Connectstwoormoresubscriber
sites(UNIs)enablingthetransferofEthernetservice
frames
•PreventsdatatransferbetweensubscribersitesthatarenotpartofthesameEVC
ThiscapabilityenablesanEVCtoprovidedataprivacyandsecuritysimilartoaFrame
RelayorATMPermanentVirtualCircuit(PVC).
MultipleEVCscanresideonacommon
bondinggrouporEthernetport.EachEVChasan
associatedEVCwhoseVLANIDisunique amongotherEVCsintheMEN.TheEVCs‐tag
allowstheEVCtobeidentifiedandseparatedfromotherEVCswithintheMEN.TheEVCs‐
tagexistsonlywithintheMENandis
nottransmittedfromorreceivedattheCE.
TheMEFdefinesEthernetLine(E‐Line)servicesasaservicethatprovidesapoint‐to‐point
EVCthatconnectsexactlytwoUNIs.
EVC Attributes
TheattributesofanEVCaredescribedinthefollowingparagraphs.
Name
ThisattributeisanarbitrarystringthatisusedtoidentifytheEVCwithintheMEN.Thevalue
mustbeuniqueacrossallEVCsdefinedinthenetworkelement,andisintendedfor
managementandcontrolpurposes.ThevalueisnotcarriedinanyfieldintheEthernetframe.
Asan
example,theAcmeServiceProvidercanuse“EVC‐0001898‐ACME‐MEGAMA RT”to
representthe1898thEVCintheMEN.Inthisexample,thecustomerfortheEVCisMegaMart.
Configuration Status
Thisread‐onlyattributeind icatesthecurrentstatusoftheEV C.TheEVCcanbeadministra‐
tivelyenabled,butcannotbeinthefunctionalstateifitisnotfullyconfiguredorifaconflict
exists.IftheEVCisnotappliedduetotheconfig urationoraconflict,refer
toTableF ‐3fora
listsofthepossiblevalues.
