EVC Definition
AnEVCisalogicalenti tythatprovidesameansforconnectingtwoendpointsintheTotal
Access5000andprovidesapathforEthernetframeswithaparticularVLANIDwithinthe
TotalAccess5000. TheEVCcross‐connectstwoormoreendpointsandprovidesthe
mechanismbywhichan
S‐tagpathiscreatedinthesystem.TheS‐tagcorrespondstothe
VLANID.
IntheTotalAccess5000,customertrafficswitchesthroughoutthesystemviaS‐tags
(outermostVLANtagonanEthernetpacket).Downstreamtrafficentersthesystemthrough
thenetworkportsontheGigESMand
isS‐tagswitchedtotheappropriateslot.TheGE8‐Port
LMthendecideshowtosendthattraffictothecustomer.Upstreamtrafficisswitchedtothe
networkinasimilarmanner.
If the NetVanta 8044 management VLAN differs from the GigE SM
managementVLAN,createanEVCfortheGigESMtopasstheNetVanta
8044managementtraffic.Whencre atingacrossconnect,setupthecross
connectwithanS‐tagequaltothe NetVanta8044managementVLAN,
pointingtotheappropriateappropriateGigE8‐PortLMport.

•AnEVCcannotbepartofanothercross‐connect
• EachEVCmusthaveauniqueS‐tag
