Replacing the Alumina in the Oil Vapor Traps
The activated alumina in the oil vapor traps becomes saturated during use. The alumina should be
replaced if either of the following conditions exist:
The alumina has been used for a three-month period.
Most of the alumina pellets are no longer white.
1. Prepare fresh alumina as follows:
a.) Heat an oven between 250 °C and 350 °C.
b.) Pour about 180 grams of alumina into a glass or metal container for each trap (approximately
250 mL if a graduated beaker is used). Place the container in the oven.
This procedure applies to oil-based vacuum pumps only.
Do not perform the following procedure on used alumina. The resultant oil vapors
may cause a fire or an explosion.
