How It Works
Testing
When the ignition key is in the ON position and the glow
plug switch is pressed, 12VDC activates a relay which
provides 12VDC to the common power rail (buss bar
connecting the glow plugs. The glow plugs are thread-
ed into the head which provides the ground to the glow
plug. The glow plug center element heats to a glowing
red temperature to pre-heat the air in the pre-combustion
chamber.
Remove the glow plug from the engine. Check the re-
sistance between the terminal stud and the housing. If
the resistance value is 5 ohms or lower the glow plug is
good.
It is recommended to replace all glow plugs if one is
found defective (Fig. 0827).

Purpose
Location
Glow plugs are a starting aid that preheats the pre-
combustion chamber for the initial cold engine start and
for cold weather starts.
The glow plug is located on the top of the engine be-
tween the injectors and the valve cover. There is one
glow plug for each cylinder (Fig. 0826).
