3-28 Rev. 000 TX525 Service Manual
Fig 0076 PICT-8762
Battery Maintenance
Service Interval:
• Every100hours—Checkthebatteryelectrolyte
level(batterieswithinspectioncaps).
• Every100hours—Checkthebatterycable
connections.
BatterySpecication:12volt,585ColdCrankingAmps
Batteriesareavailableintwobasicversions;mainten-
ancefreeandmaintenancetype.
Witheithertypeofbatteryitisimportanttohaveclean
terminalsandtightcableconnectionstothebattery
posts.Escapinggasesfromthebatterycausescorrosion
attheterminalsandothermetalparts.Thebattery
shouldbecleanedperiodicallyusingabakingsodaand
watermix;acoupleoftablespoonsbakingsodatoapint
(.5liter)ofwater.
Amaintenancetypebatteryneedsuidlevelcheckson
aroutinebasis.Usedistilledwatertobringthebattery
cellstothecorrectlevel.Checkandcleanelectricalcon-
nectionsandthechargingsystemifthebatteryrequires
waterfrequentlyandcorrosionbecomesexcessive;both
aresignsofover-charging.
Amaintenancefreebatteryissealedanduidcannotbe
added.
Coldcrankingamps(CCA)isameasurementofthe
numberofampsabatterycandeliverat0°F(-17°C)for
30secondsandnotdropbelow7.2volts.SoahighCCA
batteryratingisdesireable,especiallyincoldweather.
Sulfationofbatteriesstartswhenspecicgravityfalls
below1.225orvoltagemeasureslessthan12.4(12v
Battery).Sulfationhardensthebatteryplatesreducing
andeventuallydestroyingtheabilityofthebatteryto
storeacharge.
Sulfationisanormalprocessthatslowlyoccursover
timeandisthereasonabatteryeventuallyneedsre-
placement.However,abatterythatisallowedtobecome
dischargedandisleftinthisstatewillsufferpermanent
sulfationdamageandrequireprematurereplacement.
Occasionalchargingofthebatteryduringstorageis
recommendedtothekeepthespecicgravitytorecom-
mendedlevels.Thiswillminimizethesulfationofthe
batteryplates.
State of Charge Specic Gravity Voltage 12V

75% 1.225 12.4
50% 1.190 12.2
25% 1.155 12.0
