NSZ Needle Sensor
A. Needle Sensor
1. When used as part of the Prompted Setup routine, the needle sensor automatically
compensates for XYZ changes in needle position due to a needle change or bent
needle so that you can change needles and continue production without
reprogramming the system.
2. It does not
compensate for XYZ location changes in parts, substrates, tooling or
fixtures.
3. The needle sensor must be leveled to accurately locate the dispensing needle.
B. Theory of Operation
1. When the dispensing needle is inserted into the slot in the sensor, it passes in front
of two light beams, one for the X-Axis and one for the Y-Axis.
 As the needle interrupts a light beam, its location is detected.
 The needle XY coordinates are sent to the dispensing software, which uses the
coordinates to determine the center of the needle.
 The Z-Axis location of the needle tip is also determined and recorded.
2. The Height Sensor uses the Tactile Sensor on the NSZ Series to determine the Z-
height of the needle tip.
 The dispensing head lowers and touches the needle tip to the Tactile Sensor.
 The height of the needle tip is recorded and sent to the FmNT software.
C. Needle Sensor Setup
1. If you upgrade the FmNT software or change or adjust the Needle Sensor, you will
need to perform one of the following setup procedures:
 Calculate Master Offsets (CMO)
 Valve Offsets (VO)
 Scripted Valve Offsets (SVO)
 Camera-Assisted Scripted Valve Offsets (CASVO)
2. All four procedures perform all of the necessary setup functions.
D. Cleaning the Needle Sensor
1. Clean sensor slots with a soft cloth, cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol.
2. See Exercise Sheet 2-9-2 on page 2-2-70 for a Tactile Sensor Error.
