5-42 Panel Handling Subsystem
Digital I/O Assembly 5DX Series 3
Automatic Width Adjust control
There are two Automatic Width Adjust (AWA) motors that are connected together
electronically. They are both driven by the AWA Stepper Driver in the Motion
Control Assembly. The Stepper Driver is controlled by a single channel on Motion
Controller PCI #2. They are limited by the length of the AWA lead screw. The
AWA operates in a open-loop mode similar to the one shown in Figure 5-22.
Inner Barrier control
The Inner Barrier is monitored and controlled by Motion Controller PCI 2. A
background process in Motion Controller PCI 2 monitors the encoder positions
continuously. If this process detects that either barrier is not fully closed, the
Motion Controller PCI 2 sends an abort signal to the Motion Controller PCI 1,
which ceases all motion. These signals are all internal to the Motion Control
Assembly backplane. The abort also causes all servo modules to:
1. disable
2. open motor relays
3. apply braking (if the axis is in motion)
The each inner barrier is opened and closed by a separate air cylinder. A solenoid
valve operates the air cylinder and the solenoid valve is controlled by Motion
Controller PCI 2 via the Extended Digital I/O daughter board and the Digital I/O
Assembly. The air circuit also includes a check valve to prevent the barriers from
falling in the event of a sudden loss of pressure. A separate, independent x-ray
interlock circuit is used to ensure that x-rays are turned off if both the inner and
outer barriers are open at the same time.
Digital I/O Assembly
The Digital I/O Assembly is located in the Electronics Bay and serves as the
interface between the System Controller and the Main Cabinet. Panel loading and
unloading logic is controlled by the System Controller and executed through the
Extended Digital I/O Daughter Board to the relays in the Digital I/O Assembly.
The Extended Digital I/O Daughter Board is attached to the Motion Controller PCI
2 as shown in Figure 5-20.
The Digital I/O Assembly contains three sets of relays:
Input Direct Current Relays Handles the input signals from the sensors in
the Panel Handling Subsystem Assemblies and SMEMA inputs from other
process equipment.
