5-8 Panel Handling Subsystem
SMEMA Interface Standards 5DX Series 3
Figure 5-3 represents a portion of a production line. This configuration of
machines is know as Flow Through Mode. This mode passes panels from left-to-
right through the machine. In a production line, the last machine that a panel leaves
prior to entering the 5DX is the upstream equipment. In some cases, the upstream
equipment can actually be the conveyor system or an accumulator. In a production
line, the machine that a panel goes to after leaving the 5DX is the downstream
equipment.

Communication Signals
For the purposes of this discussion, all references to the signal functions are with
respect to the 5DX System. Figure 5-3 shows the signals used by the 5DX to meet
the SMEMA Electrical Equipment Interface Standard. These signals work in a
handshaking fashion. A panel will not transfer between the adjacent machines
unless one says, Im ready to send a panel. and the other says, Im ready to
receive the panel.
