3-6 Safety Interlock Subsystem
Safety Interlocks 5DX Series 3
Watchdog Timer
Included on the Safety Interlock Controller is a Watchdog Timer. The Watchdog
Timer’s purpose is to monitor a signal from the System Controller. Every 10
minutes, the System Controller sends a signal to the Watchdog Timer. If the
Watchdog Timer does not receive this signal, then X-rays are shut down.
There is a Watchdog Tripped LED on the Safety Interlock Controller. If the
Watchdog Timer has timed out, meaning, it has been over 10 minutes since the last
signal from the System Controller, then this red LED will light.
Safety Interlocks
The Safety Interlocks are used on the access panels, inner, outer and movable
barriers. The safety interlocks disable the X-ray, Laser, and Motion Driver
components instantaneously when one of the following conditions occurs:
• if an access panel is opened,
• if either right or left outer barrier and the inner barrier are open at the same
time,
• or if the X-ray Tube Dielectric Pressure falls below the operating specification
of 40 psi.
The status of the safety interlocks will be indicated on the Operator Control
Console and the Safety Interlock Controller. If all of the safety interlocks are
closed, then the Safety Interlocks Closed Laser On indicator will be lit. The Safety
Interlock Controller has two light emitting diodes (LEDs) that will be lit when the
safety interlock chains are closed. Refer to the section titled Safety Interlock
Controller for more information about the LED operation.

This feature has not been implemented yet. There are two jumpers
on the Safety Interlock Controller. If either of these jumpers is cut,
then the Watchdog Timer may trip and shut down X-rays.
