11.5 Synchronization of the ES800 System
11.5.1 Synchronization within the ES800 System
Every module of the ES800 system has its own clock so as to provide the samples
of the input signals with a time stamp.
In order to ensure an accurate time reference between measurement signals from
the different modules, the clocks of the individual modules are synchronized. The
clocks are synchronized via the communication network within which the data is
transferred. No additional infrastructure is required.
The PTP protocol according to IEEE1588-2008 is used between the modules of the
ES800 system to enable synchronization with devices from other manufacturers.
One module in the network assumes the function of the synchronization master.
The function is assigned dynamically depending on the accuracy of the participat
-
ing clocks. All other modules in the network are slaves and synchronize with the
cycle specified by the master module.
Synchronization takes place this way both within a module stack and between dis-
tributed modules.
11.5.2 Synchronization with ETAS Modules from other Series
Modules at the "FE" Interface
ETAS modules from the ES4xx, ES59x, ES6xx and ES9xx series that are connected
to an ES800 module via the "FE" interface are also synchronized with the time of
the ES800 synchronization master. In order to synchronize the recording of data
from the ETAS modules connected to the "FE" interface, the periodic synchroniza
-
tion signal is superimposed over the Ethernet signals (ETAS synchronization
mechanism).
A phase shift of the individual measuring signals to each other is ruled out, even if
the measured values are acquired from different modules.
Modules at the "GE" Interface
The synchronization of the ETAS modules from other series, which are connected
via the "GE-HOST" Gigabit HOST interface of an ES600.2 module to the "GE" inter-
face of an ES800 module, is supported.
