5.2 Bromine index determination (BRC)
The bromine index is a measure for the content of olefins in a sample.
The basis for the bromine index determination is the addition of bromine
to the double bond of olefins. A bromine molecule is used for every car-
bon-carbon double bond.
With the bromine index determination, the necessary bromine is directly
and electrochemically generated in the submitted electrolyte ("electronic
buret"). Between the amount of electric charge and the amount of gener-
ated bromine, there is a strictly quantitative relationship, which is used for
high-precision dosing of the bromine. No titer needs to be determined as
the bromine index determination is an absolute determination.
The bromine index is usually indicated in mg bromine per 100 g sample.
