Checking the journal oil clearance
1. Measure:
Journal oil clearance
Out of specification Rep
lace crankshaft
journal bearing.
See “Selecting the crankshaft journal bear-
ing” (7-58).
a. Clean the crankshaft journal bearings,
crankshaft journals,
and bearing por-
tions of the crankcase and cylinder
block.
b. Place the cylinder block with the
crankcase mating surface facing up.
c. Install the crankshaft journal bearings
“1” and
crankshaft “2” into the cylinder
block “3”.
Install the crankshaft journal bearings “1” in
their original positions.
Do not turn the crankshaft “2” until the journal
oil clearance measurement has been com-
pleted.
d. Place a piece of Plastigauge (PG-1)
on each crankshaft journal, parallel to
the crankshaft.
Do not place the Plastigauge (PG-1) over
the oil hole in each crankshaft journal.
e. Install the crankshaft journal bearings
into the crankcase.
Install the crankshaft journal bearings in their
original positions.
f. Install the crankcase “1”, and then
tighten the crankcase bolts (M10) “2”
to the specified torques in 2 stages
and in the order [1], [2], and so on.
In the second tightening stage for the crank-
case bolts (M10) “2”, mark the crankcase bolts
(M10)
and the crankcase “1” with identification
marks “a”, and then tighten the bolts 60 from
the marks on the crankcase.
g. Tighten the crankcase bolts (M8) “3” to
the specified torques in 2 stages and
in the order [11], [12], and so on.
