These parameters can be measured immediately after the scratch is
made by performing a cross profile measurement.
Fractured Scratches
Under severe abrasion conditions (usually generated by geometries of
indenters like cube corner or conical indenter with a small included
angle), fracture processes can occur. Particles are chipped out of the
surface and/or cracks appear in and/or outside the scratch groove. This
behavior creates irregularities in scratch penetration, tangential force
curves, and residual scratch morphology, such as shown in
Figure E-8.
