Chapter 20 Electrical
Best Practice Methods
Prevent Electrical Noise
It has been our experience that electrical noise can create issues such as ghost or phantom
systems faults, and erratic communication between sensors and the Program Logic Controller
(PLC). To prevent system performance issues associated with electrical noise we require the
following wiring techniques when installing high and low-voltage utilities.
• Avoid parallel runs or close wire proximity of wiring of motor supply from VFD and any other
wiring. This includes avoiding parallel runs with other 3 phase wiring.
• Never use combined wire ways or a trough which mixes 3 phase wires with FreeStyler®
120VAC and/or 24VAC wiring.
• Never run 120VAC and/or 24VAC in the same conduit that houses 3 Phase wiring.
• Never bundle 120VAC and/or 24VAC wiring with any 3 Phase through wire-ties or by any
other means.
• Conduit runs and hubs that contain motor wires running from the MCC to the motor should
only contain the wires running from the MCC to the motor. These conduit runs and hubs
should not contain wires from any other circuits especially 120VAC and 24VAC control wires
unless conduit contains only the cables from FreeStyler® Boom.
• Make sure when routing Boom wiring from bay to back room 3 phase wiring remains isolated
from 120VAC and/or 24VAC wiring. The 3-phase wire must be isolated in original cables or
in separate conduit.
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT ALL WIRING CONFORM COMPLETELY TO
THE SUGGESTIONS AND ABSOLUTES FROM THIS DOCUMENT AND THE
ELECTRICAL PRINTS.
Standard methods of routing and connecting motor wires are not sufficient for systems with
multiple VFD’s. If electrical noise issues are still present in the system after conforming to all
stated wiring practices, there are ways to reduce this noise. Please contact Belanger® Technical
Support for further assistance at 248-349-7010.
