3.6.3 Manual Tap Test
Tap testing is a manual process that uses a rod with a rounded tip or a lightweight hammer to tap the
surface of the laminate. The inspector must listen to the tapping to monitor the results audibly, listening
for distinct variations in the sound. A clear, sharp ringing sound is indicative of a well-bonded solid
structure while a dull or thud-like sound indicates a discrepant area. The tapping rate needs to be rapid
enough to produce enough sound such that any difference in sound tone is discernible to the ear.
