Drum Kit Overview
What’s a Drum Kit?
DrumKits,asthenameimplies,areoptimizedfor
creatingdrumsounds.Theyofferanumberofspecial
features,suchas:
• Eachnotecanplayadifferentsound
•InsteadofselectingMultisamples(whichspanthe
entirekeyboard),youcanselectDrumSamples
(whichcontainasingledrumsound).Thesecanbe
from
theROM,RAM,orEXsbanks.
•Oneachnote,youcanuseuptofourDrum
Samples,withvelocitycrossfades
• Eachnotehasseparatesettingsforthemost
importantsoundparameters,includingvolume,
filtercutoffandresonance,envelopeattackand
decay,pitch,driveandlowboost,andgainforeach
band
oftheProgramEQ.
Forinstance,youcouldcombinehighdriveand
lowcutofffrequencytocreatealo‐fieffectononlya
fewsounds,whiletherestofthesoundsremained
clearandpristine.
• EachnotecanberoutedtodifferentInsertEffects,
orhaveseparateFXSendamounts.
Forinstance,
youcansendasnaresoundthroughadedicated
compressor.
YoucanuseDrumKitsonlyinProgramswhose
OscillatorModeissettoDrums.
Drum Kit memory structure
TheOASYShas161DrumKits,dividedintoInternal,
User,andGM(GeneralMIDI)groupsasshownbelow.
Youcaneditorwriteintoanyofthelocationsexcept
fortheGMbank,whichcannotbeerased.
Fordetailsonthefactory‐programmedDrumKits,
pleaseseetheVoiceNameList.
DrumKitbanks
The9DrumKitsintheGMbankarecompatiblewith
theGM2soundmap.TheotherDrumKitsmayuse
differentmappings,whereappropriate.
Drum Kit Programs and Oscillator Mode
TheProgram’sOscillatorModesetting,onthe
ProgramBasictaboftheBasic/Vectorpage,sets
whethertheProgramisusedtoplayDrumKitsorto
playnormalMultisamples(suchaspianos,strings,
etc.).
You’llseetheresultsofthissettingontheOSC1/Basic
taboftheOSC/Pitchpage.Ifthe
OscillatorModeisset
toSingleorDouble,youcanselectuptofour
MultisamplesforeachOscillator,withvelocity
switchesorcrossfades.
IftheOscillatorModeissettoDrums,you’llbeableto
selectasingleDrumKit.Therearestillfourlevelsof
velocityswitchesandlayers‐
butthesearewithinthe
DrumKititself,andnotstoredoreditedinthe
Program.
Before you start editing…
First, select a Drum Program
DrumKitsareeditedinGlobalMode.Whileyou’ rein
GlobalMode,you’llplaythekitthatyou’ reeditingasif
youwereplayingitfromwithintheProgram,Combi,
orSongwhichwasselectedbeforeyouenteredGlobal
mode.
So,beforeyouenterGlobalmode,it’sbesttoselecta
Programwhichisalreadysetupfordrums,withthe
appropriateEGsettings,effects,andsoon.Justusethe
ProgramCategoryselectpopup,andchooseadrum
Programsuchas“StandardKit.”
OSC1/Basic Octave setting
Inorderforthenotemappingstomatchthekeyboard,
theOscillator’sOctavesettingneedstobe+0[8ʹ].All
DrumKitProgramsshouldhavethissettingalready.If
you’ reunsure,youcancheckthisyourself:
1. GototheOSC1/BasictaboftheOSC/Pitchpage.
2. CheckthattheOctaveparameter
(nearthetopof
thepage)issetto+0[8ʹ].
Withasettingotherthan+0[8ʹ],therelationship
betweenthekeysandtheDrumKitsoundmapwillbe
incorrect.
Make sure that Memory Protect is
disabled
Beforeyoustartediting,gototheGlobalBasicpage,
andlookintheMemoryProtectsection.Makesure
thatDrumKitisnotchecked–ifso,youwon’ tbeable
tomakeanyedits.
