Working with Multisamples
ThesoundoftheHD‐1startswithoneormore
Multisamples.Thesecanberecordingsofinstruments
likepiano,bass,guitar,strings,organs,analogsynths,
andsoon,orpurelydigitally‐createdtimbres.
YoucanusetheseMultisamplesdirectly,orusethem
throughWaveSequences,whichplayaseriesof
differentMultisamplesovertimetocreaterhythmsor
complex,evolvingtimbres.
InSingleandDoublemodes,eachOscillatorcanplay
uptofourMultisamplesorWaveSequences.InDrum
mode,thereisoneOscillator,anditplaysasingle
DrumKit.

youtoplaysamplesindifferentways.
•Multisampleslayoutoneormoresamplesacross
thekeyboard.Forinstance,averysimpleguitar
Multisamplemighthavesixsamples–oneforeach
string.
• WaveSequencesplaybackaseriesofdifferent
Multisamplesovertime.TheseMultisamplesmay
crossfadetocreatesmooth,evolvingtimbres,or
changeabruptlytocreaterhythms.
•Asthenamesuggests,DrumKitsareoptimizedfor
playingdrumsamples.
Velocity splits, crossfades, and layers
Asmentionedabove,unlessyou’ reinDrummode,
eachOscillatorhasfourvelocityzones,namedMS1
(High)throughMS4(Low).Thismeansthatthe
ProgramcanplaydifferentMultisamplesorWave
Sequences,dependingonhowhardyouplay.
EachofthesezoneshasseparatesettingsforLevel,
StartOffset,andso
on.Also,eachofthezonescanfade
intothenext,tocreatesmoothvelocitytransitions.
Zonescanevenbelayeredtogether,twoatatime.
Selecting Multisamples
Let’screateasimplevelocitycrossfadebetweentwo
Multisamples,usingjustOSC1.
1. GototheOSC1BasictaboftheOSC/Pitchpage.
2. SettheMS1andMS2Typeparametersto
Multisample.
3. SettheTypesforMS3andMS4toOff.
4. SelectROMStereoastheMultisampleBankfor
MS1andMS2.
Thereare
threemaintypesofMultisampleBanks:
ROM,RAM,andEXs.Foreachtype,youcanalso
choosebetweenlookingatmonoandstereo
Multisamples.NotethatstereoMultisampleswill
requiretwiceasmanyvoicesasmonoMultisamples.
ROMMultisamplesarethebuilt‐in“factory”sounds,
andarealwaysavailable.These
areorganizedby
category,suchaspianos,guitars,bells,etc.
RAMMultisamplesincludeAkai,AIFForWAVfiles
loadedfromdisk,andsamplescreatedinSampling
mode.
EXsMultisamplebanksarePCMexpansionsets
createdespeciallyfortheOASYS.Eachhasitsown
uniquenumber;forinstance,theROMExpansion
option
isEXs1,andtheConcertGrandPianooptionis
EXs2.OnlythecurrentlyloadedEXsbankswillappear
inthismenu.

ThisbringsupalistofMultisamples,organizedby
category.Usethetabsattheleftofthescreentobrowse
throughthedifferentcategories.
6. SelectaMultisamplebytouchingitsnameinthe
list.
7. PresstheOKbuttontoconfirmyourselection.
8. DothesameforMS2.

MS2,let’ssetupthevelocityrangesandcrossfades.
9. SetMS2’sBottomVelocityto001,anditsXfade

MS1’sBottomVelocityto80.
Now,MS2willsoundwhenyouplaysoftly,at
velocitiesof79orless–andMS1willsoundwhenyou
playharder,withvelocitiesof80ormore.
