Discontinue Background Operations
Youcannotupdatedrivefirmwareifthelibraryisactivelyrunningany
backgroundoperations,including
MediaAutoDiscovery,
PreScan,and
PostScan.
IfyoudonotwanttowaitforaMediaAutoDiscovery,PreScan,or
PostScanoperationtocomplete,youcanstoptheMediaAutoDiscoveryor
PreScanoperationorpausethePostScanoperation.Forotherbackground
operations,waitfortheprocesstocomplete.

Discontinue Backups and Empty the Drives
Beforebeginningthedrivefirmwareupdateprocess,discontinueall
backupoperationsandremoveanycartridgesfromthedrives.
Ifpossible,useyourstoragemanagementsoftwaretomoveany
cartridgesthatarecurrentlyindrivesbacktotheirstoragelocations.
Ifyoucannotuseyourstoragemanagementsoftware,thenmove
thecartridgesasdescribedinMovingCartridgesWithinaPartition
onpage265.
Update Drives Using ITDT
1. FollowtheinstructionsintheITDTdocumentationtoupdatethedrive
firmware.
2. ResettheupdateddrivesasdescribedinResettingaDriveonpage395
torestoretheirconfigurationsettings.
3. Aftertheupdateiscomplete,useyourstoragemanagementsoftwareto
restartanybackupprocesses.
Attempting to update the firmware while the library is busy or when the drives
contain tapes may result in the update failing, failed backup jobs, or permanent
damage to the drives. If you did not already do so, stop all backup operations and
remove all tapes from the drives you are updating.
