MEDIA POOLS
Insidethelibrary,magazines,andthecartridgestheycontain,arelogically
groupedthroughtheuseofpools.Thesepoolsaremadeupofchambers,
eachofwhichaccommodatesasinglemagazine.Thelibraryhasthree
differenttypesofpools:thefreepool,oneormoreentry/exitpools,and
oneormorestoragepools.Figure28onpage58showshowtheentry/exit
andstoragepoolsarerelatedtopartitionsinthelibrary.
Free pool Chambersthatarenotassignedtoapartitionareinthefree
pool.Thesechamberscanbeassignedtoastoragepartitionoracleaning
partition.Thechambersinthefreepoolcannotbeaccessedthroughthe
BlueScaleuserinterfaceorthestoragemanagementsoftwareuntiltheyare
addedtoapartition.
Entry/Exit pool Thechambersinastoragepartition’sentry/exitpool
provideaninterimstoragelocationforcartridgesduringimportand
exportoperations.Together,theentry/exitpoolandtheTAPfunctionasa
configurableentry/exitportforthelibrary.
Youspecifythenumberofchambersassignedtotheentry/exitpoolwhen
youcreateastoragepartition.Cleaningpartitionsdonothaveanentry/exit
pool.
Acartridgeisintheentry/exitpoolforoneofthefollowingreasons:
Itwasejectedfromthestoragepoolbythestoragemanagement
softwareormovedmanuallyusingtheBlueScaleuserinterface.To
removethecartridgesfromalibrary,theoperatorusesthelibrary’s
BlueScaleuserinterfacetoinitiatetheexportprocess.

Amagazinecontainingoneormorecartridgeswasimportedintothe
libraryusingtheTAP .Fromtheentry/exitpool,thecartridgescanbe
importedintothestoragepartition’sstoragepooleitherbythestorage
managementsoftwareormanuallythroughtheBlueScaleuser
interface.

Amagazinecontainingoneormorespecial‐purposecartridgeswas
importedintothelibraryusingtheTAP .Thesecartridgesmaybeused
forcleaningadriveusingtheDLMDriveTestfeature,orforupdating
drivefirmwareusingacodeloadtape.
