Storing Cartridges
Whileinuse,cartridgesarestoredinTeraPackmagazinesinsidethe
library.Whenthecartridgesareoutsideofthelibrary,SpectraLogic
recommendsstoringtheminmagazineswithdustcovers.
Storingandhandlingcartridgesinmagazineshelpstoeliminateerrors
resultingfrommishandlingindividualcartridges,whichistheleading
causeofcartridgedamage.Anoptionalclearplasticdustcoversnapsonto
themagazinetoprotectthecartridges.
Wheneveryouremovecartridgesfromyourlibrary,besuretostorethem
properlytomaximizearchivallifeandensuredataintegrity.Followthese
guidelinesforpropercartridgestorage:
Storecartridgesinasuitableenvironment(seeTapeMedia
Specificationsonpage550).
Keepthestoragelocationasfreeofairborneparticulatesaspossible.To
eliminateobvioussourcesofparticulates,donotpermitanyoneto
smoke,eat,ordrinknearthestoragearea,anddonotstorecartridges
nearacopierorprinterthatmayemittonerandpaperdust.
Storecartridgeswiththewrite‐protectswitchintheprotectedposition
(seePreparingCartridgesforUseonpage221).
Storecartridgesassoonaspossibleafteryouremovethemfromthe
library.Immediatestoragehelpsavoidmanyoftheconditionsthatcan
damagetapes,suchastemperatureandhumidityfluctuations,
particulatecontamination,andexcessivehandling.
IfyouplantoshipaTeraPackmagazine,makesurethatyouhavea
propershippingcontainerandthatyouuseadequatepackingmaterial.
TheTeraPackcarryingcasesavailablefromSpectraLogicaredesigned
forsafelytransportingTeraPackmagazinesoffsiteandarecompatible
withIronMountain.
