descriptionanddefinitionofthissymbologyfromtheAutomatic
IdentificationManufacturers(AIM)specification,theUniformSymbol
Specification(USS‐39),andtheANSIMH10.8M‐1993ANSIBarcode
specification.
Application and Orientation Thebarcodelabelmustbeappliedtothe
cartridgesothatitfitswithinthelabelrecessontheedgeofthecartridge
withoutcurlinguponthesidesorends.Thelabelmustbeorientedsothat
thebarcodecharactersarealongtheedgeclosesttothehubsideofthe
cartridge.
Printed Characters Thelabelcanhavehuman‐readablealphanumeric
charactersprintedalongthetoporbottomedgeofthelabelprovidedthere
isnoconflictorinterferencewiththeautomationcode.Thistextmust
includethebarcodedata,butcanalsoincludeadditionaltext.Theformat
andcolorsofthehumanreadablecharactersisuptothecustomerand

Note: Whenusingbarcodelabelswithalphanumericcharactersalong
thebottomedge,thelabelmustbepositionedsothatbarcodeis
atleast13.72mmbelowthetopedgeofthecartridgetoensure
thatthebarcodereadercanreadthelabel.
Barcode Data Thelibrarysupportsbarcodedatastringsconsistingoffrom
1to16characters,includinganoptionalchecksumcharacter.Quietzones
precedeandfollowthestartandstopcharacters.
ThebarcodedatastringonstandardSpectraLogicbarcodelabelsconsistsofa
startcharacter ,eightalphanumericcharacters,achecksumcharacter,andthe
stopcharacter.Quietzonesprecedeandfollowthestartandstopcharacters.
Thefirstsix(6)charactersfollowingthestartcharactercanbeany
combinationofuppercaseA‐Zor0‐9(forexample,ABC123)toidentify
thecartridgeVolumeSerialNumber.Theuseof“CLN”and
“DG{space}”atthebeginningofthevolumeidentifierisreserved.
Thevolumeidentifier“CLNvnn”isreservedforcleaningcartridges.
Whenadriverequirescleaning,itrequestsaspecifictypeof
cleaningcartridge.
The“v”fieldisanalphanumericfieldtoidentifycleaning
cartridgeapplications,“U”forUniversalCleaningCartridgesor
adriveuniqueidentifier.
The“nn”alphanumericfieldisusedtotrackindividualcleaning
cartridgeactivity(thatis,usageandlife).
Thevolumeidentifier“DG{space}vnn”isreservedfordiagnostic
andservicecartridges.
